A witness in the murder trial of Andre Ruddock broke down in court while recounting how he was allegedly shot twice in the back by late Pathways International Church leader Dr Kevin Smith.
The witness, whose identity is being withheld by court order, was given a short break to compose himself after sobbing openly while describing the incident.
He testified that Smith took a firearm from a female police officer who was at the church and began firing at police personnel on the premises.
According to the witness, he took cover behind a column but could still see Smith shooting. While standing there, he heard a loud explosion and realised he had been shot.
“I felt like I got a hard punch, then I fell down,” he told the court.
The witness said Smith then pushed his finger into one of the gunshot wounds and told him, “You are immortal; you cannot die.”
He said Smith repeated the statement after shooting him.
Earlier in his testimony, the witness also described being stabbed in the back and alleged that Smith said his throat had to be cut.
The testimony forms part of the trial against Ruddock, who is charged with the October 17, 2021, murder of 39-year-old Taneka Gardner during an alleged sacrificial ritual at the church.
Smith died about a week after the church incident in a motor vehicle crash while being transported to Kingston to face criminal charges.
