KINGSTON,e Jamaica — The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) has requested a preliminary report from the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) by Monday following the islandwide power outage that affected customers from approximately 9:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5, into Saturday, June 6.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the OUR said it is actively engaging JPS to determine the cause of the widespread blackout, evaluate the company’s response, and assess the stability of the electricity system following the disruption.
The regulator has instructed JPS to provide details on the sequence of events leading to the outage, the factors that contributed to it, and the impact on the generation, transmission, and distribution networks, as well as the effect on customers across the island.
Additionally, the OUR has requested information on the immediate corrective actions being implemented to reduce the likelihood of a similar incident occurring in the future.
According to the regulator, the preliminary report will serve as the basis for a more comprehensive investigation. Under the Electricity Act, 2015, JPS is required to submit a detailed report to the OUR within 30 days after power has been fully restored.
JPS has since indicated that electricity service has been restored to customers islandwide.
