Deadly weather is sweeping across the Caribbean tonight as Tropical Storm Melissa continues to churn in the warm waters south of Jamaica, leaving one man dead and several others injured in Haiti.
According to Haiti’s Civil Protection Agency, an elderly man in the coastal town of Marigot in southern Haiti was killed after a massive tree fell on him during heavy rainfall linked to the storm.
At least five other people were injured in flooding reported in the Artibonite region as rising waters and landslides battered parts of the country overnight.
Melissa, which formed earlier this week, is now posing a serious threat to Jamaica and southern Hispaniola, with forecasters warning of life-threatening floods and landslides across the region.
The Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in its 11:00 a.m. update that the centre of Tropical Storm Melissa was located near latitude 15.4 North, longitude 74.9 West, moving north-northwest at 2 mph (4 km/h).
On its current path, Melissa is expected to move closer to Jamaica and the southwestern coast of Haiti over the next two days, before taking a westward turn over the weekend.
Melissa Expected to Strengthen
Meteorologists say maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph (75 km/h), with stronger gusts recorded in some areas. The storm is forecast to strengthen gradually, with rapid intensification possible this weekend.
If projections hold, Melissa could become a hurricane within the next couple of days, and possibly a major hurricane by Sunday.
Emergency response agencies across the Caribbean — including Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) — are on high alert, urging residents in flood-prone areas to prepare for worsening weather conditions.
