Oakland Man Dies Trying to Save Family from Christmas Morning Fire

OAKLAND, Calif. – A tragic fire on Christmas morning claimed the life of a hero. Steven Weatherford, a beloved member of the Oakland community, died while attempting to save his family from their burning home.

The fire erupted around 6:15 a.m., prompting a swift response from the Oakland Fire Department. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered Weatherford’s body inside the residence. He is believed to have succumbed to smoke inhalation.

Weatherford, known for his kind and generous spirit, was deeply loved by his family and friends. His girlfriend, Lashante Mayo, shared the devastating news that he planned to propose to her on New Year’s Eve.

“He was truly the best person you could ever meet,” Mayo said, her voice filled with grief. “He died trying to get them out of the house. And he succeeded! I loved him so much.”

Eunice Smith, Weatherford’s aunt, described him as a pillar of the family, often hosting large gatherings at the home. “He was trying to save everybody, make sure everybody was out of the house,” Smith recalled. “He may not have known they all went out the back. And my other nephew was calling for him… He never made it out.”

Despite the tragic loss, the family finds solace in knowing that Weatherford’s actions saved the lives of his loved ones.

“He saved his family. He saved four people in that house,” Smith emphasized. “He woke them up and he saved them, and he went back – I guess because he wasn’t sure that everybody was out of the house.”
Sandra Clark, Mayo’s mother, echoed the sentiments, praising Weatherford as a loving and devoted partner. “When I met him, I said, ‘That’s the one. That’s the one,'” Clark shared. “He loved her so much. And I found out he was going to propose to her. He had bought the ring.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
