The National Water Commission (NWC) is defending its application for a 51 per cent tariff increase, arguing that rising operating costs and worsening revenues have placed its finances under pressure.
Acting NWC President Kevin Kerr told Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday, October 20, that the application had been submitted to the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) the previous Friday.
The proposed adjustment could affect approximately 500,000 customers. It remains subject to regulatory approval.
Kerr said the submission is tied to an investment plan intended to secure financing for priority projects. He warned that the commission would have to revise that plan if the OUR does not approve the full increase.
Members of the public will have an opportunity to provide feedback through consultations before the regulator makes its determination.
NWC Chief Financial Officer Fabian Christie told the committee that the commission’s revenue position had deteriorated, particularly in relation to customer payments, while expenses, including energy costs, continued to climb.
The commission maintains that the adjustment is needed to bring revenues in line with expenditure. Its last tariff increase was granted in 2019.
