GRAM-ADO, Brazil – At least nine people tragically lost their lives on Sunday morning when a small plane crashed into a commercial area of this popular tourist city in southern Brazil.
The Piper Cheyenne 400 turboprop aircraft suffered a catastrophic accident, initially striking the chimney of a building before impacting the second floor of a residence. The plane subsequently plummeted onto a furniture store, causing significant damage. An inn also sustained damage in the incident.
Cleber dos Santos Lima, director of the Interior Police Department of the state civil police, confirmed to AFP that there were no survivors among the plane’s occupants.
The exact number of passengers and crew aboard the aircraft is still being confirmed by authorities, although initial reports suggested 10 people may have been on board.
At least 15 individuals were transported to local hospitals, primarily for treatment of smoke inhalation resulting from the fire ignited by the crash.
The aircraft had departed from the nearby tourist town of Canela. Gramado, renowned for its picturesque scenery and charming architecture, experiences a surge in visitors during the Christmas season.
