PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – The Haitian government has declared a one-month state of emergency, effective immediately, in response to the escalating crisis of gang violence and widespread insecurity gripping the nation.
The measure, approved by the Council of Ministers, will remain in effect until January 21, 2025. This declaration aims to bolster the capabilities of the Haitian National Police in their fight against armed gangs, while simultaneously addressing critical issues such as the agricultural and food crises, and ultimately restoring public safety.
To effectively address the ongoing security challenges and support the framework for a peaceful political transition outlined in an agreement reached in April 2024, a National Security Council (NSC) has been established.
The Haitian government has pledged its commitment to implementing all necessary measures to restore security, ensure the proper functioning of key institutions, and effectively confront the multifaceted challenges facing the nation.
This decisive action follows a series of violent incidents, including the tragic torching of Bernard Mevs Hospital by gang members allegedly under the command of Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier. Furthermore, several gang members, including a suspected high-ranking lieutenant, have been killed in recent police operations.
