A newly constructed infirmary in Falmouth, Trelawny, is scheduled to officially open on November 19, following the destruction of the previous facility during Hurricane Melissa.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness is expected to lead the opening, Minister of Local Government and Community Development Desmond McKenzie announced on Sunday, November 1.
McKenzie was addressing the Local Government and Community Month National Church Service at Transformed Life Church in Kingston.
The opening follows the displacement of approximately 60 residents and 40 staff members after the Trelawny Infirmary sustained severe hurricane damage and was declared unsafe for occupancy.
Those displaced were first accommodated at Hague Primary School. They were later moved to the Elliston Wakeland Youth Centre in Falmouth so classes could resume at the school.
McKenzie said Trelawny was among five parishes severely affected by Hurricane Melissa in October 2025. He highlighted the destruction of the infirmary and extensive damage to municipal buildings in Trelawny and Black River.
The new facility forms part of efforts to restore local government infrastructure damaged by the hurricane
