New $50-Million Adelphi Health Centre Officially Opened in St. James

Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Christopher Tufton, officially opened the new Adelphi Health Centre in St. James on Thursday, a $50-million facility designed to improve healthcare access for thousands of residents. The 4,262 square-foot building was funded through the European Union’s (EU) Poverty Reduction Programme (PRP) and implemented by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF).

Replacing an outdated structure, the new centre is now capable of serving approximately 2,000 community members each month. It includes upgraded facilities such as four consultation rooms, two dental offices, a pharmacy, and treatment areas, providing a modern and comfortable space for both patients and healthcare workers.

During his address, Dr. Tufton highlighted the significance of the investment. “We have 24 health centres in the parish of St. James, and 11 of those have seen substantial improvements in the last five years, including this new Adelphi centre. These renovations are key to enhancing infrastructure and improving healthcare delivery,” he said. He also emphasized the government’s broader “Operation Refresh” initiative, a $1-billion plan to renovate 100 health centres across Jamaica in the next 18 months.

Tufton noted the importance of the collaborative efforts of the EU, JSIF, and local stakeholders, which contributed to the success of the Adelphi project. Head of the EU Delegation to Jamaica, Dr. Erja Askola, echoed these sentiments, stating, “Our common goal with the Government of Jamaica is to strengthen health systems and improve the quality of life for Jamaicans. This is why we are investing in these health facilities.”

Member of Parliament for St. James East Central, Edmund Bartlett, praised the new centre’s potential to serve over 21,000 residents in the surrounding areas and thanked the healthcare workers who persevered under challenging conditions.

The Adelphi Health Centre is one of four centres in St. James renovated under the EU’s PRP, with others located in Flanker, Barrett Town, and Granville.
