St Catherine, Jamaica – The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the fatal shooting of a man by police on the compound of the Spanish Town Hospital on Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as 24-year-old Jamar Boothe, unemployed, of Old Road, Thompson Pen, Spanish Town.
Reports are that about 9:25 a.m., lawmen had escorted a prisoner to the hospital for a medical appointment. While they waited, Boothe allegedly attacked the man in custody with a knife.
Police say they instructed Boothe to drop the weapon, but he reportedly ignored their commands and continued his assault. Officers opened fire, injuring him.
During the melee, a 33-year-old man is also said to have sustained injuries to one of his hands.
The knife was recovered at the scene, and Boothe was rushed to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department, where he succumbed while undergoing treatment.
INDECOM has since taken over investigations into the incident.
