A private jet reportedly crashed in North Carolina early Thursday morning, leaving multiple people dead, according to local authorities.
Local news station WBTV reports that the aircraft, a Cessna C550, crashed at Statesville Regional Airport, about 50 miles north of Charlotte, and exploded in a massive fireball on impact.
Business records cited by WBTV indicate that the jet is owned by a company affiliated with retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle. The exact number of passengers on board has not yet been confirmed, however, law enforcement officials told WBTV that more than one person was killed.
According to the City of Statesville, the airport provides aviation facilities for several NASCAR teams. Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
