A Missouri mother has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after admitting that she accidentally placed her one-month-old daughter in an oven instead of a crib, resulting in the baby’s death.
Mariah Thomas, 28, of Kansas City, Missouri, was sentenced on Tuesday after pleading guilty to first-degree endangering the welfare of a child resulting in death.
The incident happened in February 2024, when Thomas was reportedly putting her daughter, Za’Riah Mae, down for a nap. Investigators said she mistakenly placed the baby inside the oven.
The child was later found with severe burns and was pronounced dead.
As part of a plea agreement, a first-degree murder charge against Thomas was dismissed.
Thomas will serve 13 years in prison for the child’s death.
