Montgomery County, Maryland: A 39-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of drowning her 3-month-old daughter.
On December 8th, Mackenzie Colgan called emergency services to report that she had drowned her infant while bathing her. Responding officers and medical personnel attempted to revive the child, but were unsuccessful.
Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit subsequently arrested Colgan on charges of first-degree murder.
According to court documents, Colgan allegedly planned to kill herself and her family after drowning her daughter. She reportedly changed her mind about jumping from a second-floor window and instead informed her husband of the tragic incident.
Colgan has admitted to holding her daughter underwater until she was certain the child was dead. She reportedly stated her intention to end her own life and the lives of her husband and two other children.
A competency evaluation has been ordered for Colgan.
