Montego Bay, Jamaica: Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett has announced the government’s intention to remove the tax on gratuities for workers in the tourism industry.
Bartlett believes that eliminating this tax will significantly boost the income of tourism workers, potentially doubling their take-home pay. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that these gratuities, which are rightfully earned by tourism workers, reach them in full.
The minister made these remarks during the Golden Tourism Day Awards ceremony held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre. The event honored tourism workers who have dedicated 50 or more years of outstanding service to the industry.
Bartlett also highlighted the need for labor market reforms in the tourism industry. He acknowledged the recent labor unrest and pledged to work towards improving the working conditions and overall well-being of tourism workers.
