More than 11,000 beneficiaries are expected to receive housing recovery grants within two weeks, Labour and Social Security Minister Pearnel Charles Jr. announced at Wednesday’s post-Cabinet press briefing.
He said the cases were ready for payment once the ministry receives additional funding. Thousands more applications are expected to complete processing during that period.
The payments fall under the Restoration of Owner or Occupant Family Shelters (ROOFS) programme, which assists households whose homes were damaged by Hurricane Melissa.
Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness has announced another $9.65 billion to complete payments to qualified beneficiaries. The Government aims to reach 90 per cent of assessed households by December, with the remainder targeted for January 2027.
Charles Jr. reported that more than 49,000 beneficiaries have already received assistance through ROOFS, while 106,350 were assessed as eligible across the minor, major and severe damage categories.
