St. Andrew, Jamaica — Millions of dollars stolen from a Beryllium armoured vehicle remain unaccounted for nearly a week after police arrested the security guard accused of making off with the cash.
Authorities say the exact amount taken is still unclear. Sources indicate the stolen sum could be between $15 and $20 million, though official confirmation has not been provided. An official at the Guardsman Group, parent company of Beryllium, declined to comment when contacted on Tuesday.
No criminal charges have been filed against the 42-year-old guard as of early Wednesday. Investigators say he is yet to complete the question-and-answer session, a standard procedure conducted in the presence of a suspect’s attorney before charges are laid.
The guard was apprehended at a St. Andrew premises last Thursday after reportedly being on the run for seven days. He was part of a three-man team assigned to collect cash at MegaMart in St. Andrew on October 11.
According to reports, the guard remained inside the armoured vehicle while his colleagues went inside the store. When they returned, both the guard and the cash were nowhere to be found. His company-issued firearm and uniform were reportedly left behind.
Police continue their investigation into the incident as efforts to locate the missing millions intensify.
