St. Andrew, Jamaica (Mckoy’s News) – The son of internationally acclaimed dancehall artiste Mavado, Dantay Brooks, has once again found himself in trouble with the law. Brooks was charged yesterday with assault at common law, unlawful wounding, possession of a prohibited weapon, and using a prohibited weapon to commit a scheduled offence.
Reliable sources have confirmed that the young Brooks is also under investigation for another firearm-related incident, as police continue to probe several gun crimes in the volatile Cassava Piece area of St. Andrew.
According to investigators, the current charges stem from an incident that occurred on July 12, around 9:30 p.m., in the vicinity of ‘Pon Di Gaza’, Cassava Piece. Reports are that a confrontation erupted, leading to the alleged assault and firearm offences.
This latest legal trouble comes only months after Brooks walked free in March 2025, when the Court of Appeal overturned his 2021 murder conviction in the high-profile killing of Lorenzo Thomas, also known as “Israel.” His co-accused, Andre Hinds, was likewise freed.
During that trial, prosecutors had alleged that Brooks and Hinds were among a group of five men who stormed a house in Cassava Piece on June 5, 2018, fatally shooting Thomas before attempting to burn the body.
Meanwhile, Brooks’ father, dancehall heavyweight Mavado (born David Brooks), recently returned to Jamaica after seven years overseas, where a warrant for his arrest had remained unresolved. Upon his return last week, the entertainer met with the police, and the warrant was officially vacated a day later.
Police investigators say they are closely monitoring developments as the probe into Dantay Brooks’ latest case continues.
