Manchester, Jamaica — The father of Christiana High School student Shantina Sergeant, whose charred remains were found behind their home in Baillieston, Clarendon, has been charged with a sexual offence involving a child, in a case that has left the community reeling.
Lawrence Sergeant, already under police custody as a suspect in his daughter’s murder, was charged on Monday with grievous sexual assault, stemming from allegations that he molested a six-year-old several years ago, sources confirmed.
DNA samples were collected from Sergeant and another family member as part of the ongoing investigation, while authorities await forensic results to determine who will be formally charged in Shantina’s brutal killing.
A post-mortem examination revealed that the 13-year-old died from blunt force trauma, raising further questions about the circumstances leading to her tragic death.
Sergeant was first questioned in the presence of his attorney just over a week ago and was arrested in Old Harbour, St. Catherine, four days after Shantina’s remains were discovered behind their home.
The case has sent shockwaves across Clarendon and Manchester, leaving residents stunned as police continue to probe the family and their connections to uncover the full truth behind the girl’s death.
