GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Michigan — A Michigan community is in mourning after a 39-year-old mother and her six children were killed in what authorities believe was a murder-suicide that also claimed the life of the children’s father.
According to law enforcement, Kristopher Karolkiewicz allegedly shot and killed his wife, Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, and their six children inside their Grand Haven Township home on July 24. Investigators say he then set the house on fire before taking his own life.
The victims’ children ranged in age from 5 to 15 years old.
In the days following the tragedy, past online posts believed to have been written by Amanda have resurfaced, offering a glimpse into the couple’s troubled marriage.
According to The Detroit News, a Reddit account it independently verified as belonging to Amanda—based on matching personal details, including marriage timeline, children, occupations and location—contained posts discussing her husband’s alleged infidelity.
In one 2024 post on the “As One After Infidelity” subreddit, Amanda claimed her husband had been involved in an affair with a younger intern.
“He was divorced and older than me… fast forward ten years and five kids, he was cheating with the intern again — the same age I was when I was the intern,” the post read.
Amanda wrote that she struggled emotionally after discovering the alleged affair but eventually decided to focus on herself and her children.
She also revealed that she remained in the marriage largely because of their children, saying she told herself she loved them more than she hated her husband at the time.
The posts further described efforts to repair the relationship through therapy and marriage counselling. Amanda acknowledged that while she believed their relationship had improved over the years, she still struggled to feel emotionally secure.
She wrote that feeling “safe” meant trusting that her husband would not become angry or defensive when she was emotionally triggered, adding that although he was trying to improve, rebuilding that sense of security remained difficult.
Authorities have not indicated whether the contents of the online posts are connected to the killings, and investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
The deaths have shocked the Grand Haven Township community as officials continue working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
