The Independent Commission of Investigation (INDECOM) is investigating the fatal shooting of a mentally challenged man by police in Sheffield District, Westmoreland, on Sunday morning.
The deceased has been identified only as Alex.
Reports indicate that shortly after 12:20 a.m., the Negril police were alerted to a disturbance involving a man of unsound mind in the Sheffield community, where he was reportedly trying to break into houses.
Upon arrival, officers were engaging with residents when Alex, who was naked, suddenly rushed out, entered the police vehicle, and grabbed one of the officers by the neck.
In an effort to protect himself, the officer drew his gun and fired at Alex, who was later taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
