Spanish Town, Jamaica – Norman Scott, Mayor of Spanish Town, is facing criminal charges following an alleged altercation on election day in South East St Elizabeth.
Scott has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious destruction of property. A summons for the offences was served on him at 11:00 am Friday, police sources confirmed.
According to law enforcement in St Elizabeth, the investigation stems from allegations made by Julie Holness-Francis, a resident and election day worker on September 3.
Police reports indicate that after midday on election day, Scott visited polling stations at BB Coke High School, reportedly overstaying the permitted time set by the Electoral Office of Jamaica. Agents at the location attempted to remind him of the regulation, but Scott reportedly continued his visits, causing a commotion.
Holness-Francis, who was serving as an indoor agent, approached Scott and informed him of the overstay. In an effort to signal the crowd to quiet down, she raised her hand. It is alleged that Scott struck her on the right side of her face, causing swelling and damage to her glasses.
The mayor denies the allegations, police said.
Scott is scheduled to appear before the Santa Cruz Parish Court at 10:00 am on Monday, October 13 to answer the charges.
