St Ann, Jamaica — Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate Matthew Samuda has been declared the new Member of Parliament for St Ann North Eastern following a decisive victory in Monday’s by-election. Samuda secured 4,838 votes, easily defeating independent candidate David Anderson, who garnered 222 votes, and United Independents Congress (UIC) candidate Chase Neil, who received just 30 votes.
The People’s National Party (PNP) opted not to contest the by-election, which saw a notably low voter turnout of just 11.6 per cent. Samuda’s vote count represents 95 per cent of those who came out to cast their ballots.
The Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) announced that the final counting of ballots will begin on Tuesday, October 1, at the designated counting centre.
Samuda takes over from former JLP Member of Parliament Marsha Smith, who resigned earlier this month, prompting the by-election.
