HANOVER, Jamaica – A devastating fire ravaged a section of the Lucea Market in Hanover early Friday morning, destroying multiple board shops and leaving significant damage in its wake.
The fire broke out at around 3:51 a.m., prompting a swift response from the nearby Lucea Fire Brigade.
Two fire units initially responded to the scene, with additional support arriving from Montego Bay and Negril fire stations. District Officer Emellio Somerville confirmed that 22 shops were completely destroyed, while six others sustained partial damage. The fire was brought under control in approximately 45 minutes.
One firefighter was injured during the operation after suffering an electric shock from downed power lines and was hospitalized for treatment. Somerville highlighted that electrical hazards posed a challenge in the firefighting efforts.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the total loss in property and contents is yet to be determined. A team is currently conducting a full assessment of the damages.
