The Maritime Authority of Jamaica is calling on seafarers across the island to heighten safety measures as deteriorating weather conditions affect offshore areas.
According to the Authority, recent forecasts point to rough and unpredictable seas, creating hazardous conditions particularly for small vessels operating in Jamaican waters.
Speaking in an interview with Jamaica Information Service, Director of Safety, Environment and Certification, Captain Stephen Spence, stressed the importance of careful decision-making before heading out to sea.
He urged operators to evaluate marine conditions thoroughly and avoid unnecessary risks during the current weather system.
Fisherfolk have been specifically advised to remain on land until conditions improve. Captain Spence emphasized that vessels should be properly secured to prevent damage while the adverse weather persists.
The Authority underscored that these precautions are essential to reducing the likelihood of incidents and protecting both lives and property.
Mariners are also being encouraged to stay informed by tracking updates from the Meteorological Service of Jamaica and adhering to all official advisories.
The Maritime Authority indicated that it is actively monitoring the situation and will continue issuing updates as conditions evolve.
