ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — One of two men killed during Friday morning’s prolonged armed standoff with police in Sligoville is believed to be the estranged son of a recently retired police officer.
Dennis Brooks, senior communications strategist for the Jamaica Constabulary Force, said the suspected family connection had not been definitively confirmed.
“I do believe that one of the young men was the estranged child of a member of the constabulary, a recent retiree from the constabulary,” Brooks told reporters.
According to Brooks, the two deceased men were reportedly linked to a criminal organisation and associated with a high-risk target in St Andrew.
One policeman was killed during the confrontation. A young girl and another officer remained hospitalised in serious condition, while a third policeman suffered a bullet graze. A baby was also caught up in the incident.
Police had gone to the property acting on intelligence before dawn. The confrontation continued for hours, with numerous police personnel and vehicles, along with Jamaica Defence Force heavy-duty vehicles, deployed to the scene.
Brooks said the sustained gunfire indicated that the men had access to substantial ammunition and multiple weapons.
Two firearms were seized. However, he said evidence suggested additional weapons had been used, prompting further operations.
