MANCHESTER, Jamaica — One man died and five other people were taken to hospital after a two-vehicle collision along the Winston Jones Highway in Mandeville on Monday night.
The deceased has been identified by police and relatives as Dave Ebanks Jr, otherwise known as “DJ,” an employee of Holsum Bakery in Williamsfield, Manchester.
Reports from investigators indicate the crash occurred about 9:00 p.m. when Ebanks was driving a Honda Integra uphill and reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The car then collided with a Toyota Wish operating as a public passenger vehicle, which was travelling downhill with five occupants aboard.
Emergency personnel, including firefighters and police, responded to the scene and assisted in removing the injured from the wreckage. Ebanks was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The five occupants of the Toyota were also transported for medical treatment and were hospitalized overnight.
Investigators at the scene indicated that speeding and improper overtaking may have contributed to the crash. Police also pointed to the presence of an unbroken white line along the roadway as part of their preliminary observations.
The Manchester Traffic Department, along with the Area Three Accident Investigation and Reconstruction Unit, has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
