A fatal police shooting in Portmore, St Catherine, on Tuesday has triggered an investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).
The deceased has been identified as Daveion McDonald of Newlands, Portmore.
Reports from the police indicate that about 11:50 a.m., officers were on patrol in Portmore when they received information about armed men travelling in a Toyota Probox motor car in the Cumberland area.
A team of officers travelling in two unmarked service vehicles reportedly went to West Cumberland, where the Toyota Probox was spotted.
Police say an attempt was made to intercept the vehicle, but officers in one of the service cars allegedly came under gunfire. Another police team also reportedly encountered gunshots while trying to stop the vehicle.
Lawmen reportedly returned fire, and the Toyota Probox eventually came to a halt.
When officers approached the vehicle, McDonald was reportedly found suffering from gunshot wounds beside the open driver’s door.
Authorities say a Taurus G3 nine-millimeter pistol fitted with a magazine containing four rounds of ammunition was recovered at the scene.
