KINGSTON, Jamaica — An Asian man was fined $50,000 or sentenced to 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to bribing a police officer. The ruling was handed down in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Tuesday.
The accused, Jian Xin He, reportedly attempted to offer a police constable $3,000 to dismiss an earlier offence. The constable rejected the bribe and subsequently arrested him.
During sentencing, Senior Parish Judge Sanchia Burrell criticized the accused for his actions, remarking, “Since you have $3,000 to give away, I am going to let you give some money to the government.” The judge further emphasized the seriousness of bribery, describing it as “disrespectful and unacceptable in Jamaica.”
With the assistance of a translator, Jian Xin He expressed understanding of the judgment as it was relayed to him.
The case highlights the commitment of law enforcement and the judiciary to tackle corruption and maintain integrity within the justice system. Authorities continue to warn that bribery and other attempts to obstruct justice will face severe penalties.
