Westmoreland, Jamaica (McKoy’s News) – A Westmoreland man is dead and a police officer nursing gunshot wounds following a fiery shootout in the early hours of Thursday morning in Tank Lane, Negril.
The dead man has been identified as Niarrie Richardson, otherwise known on the streets as “Draco”.
Reports are that around 4:34 a.m., a team of lawmen was conducting a pre-dawn operation at a premises in Tank Lane when they came under heavy gunfire from an alleged gunman.
Sources say Richardson, believed to be armed with a handgun, reportedly challenged the police, leading to a brief but intense gun battle.
When the smoke cleared, both Richardson and one officer were found suffering from gunshot wounds.
A loaded pistol, fitted with six 9mm rounds, was reportedly taken from the deceased.
Richardson was rushed to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The injured officer is said to be in stable condition.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has since launched a probe into the matter.
