Man Fatally Shot by Police in Westmoreland

WESTMORELAND, Jamaica — Thirty-year-old Bijorn “Cody” Ellis of Bath district, Burnt Savannah, was shot and killed by police along the Llandilo main road late Sunday.

According to the police report, around 10:20 p.m., Ellis allegedly attempted to run over a police officer at a vehicle checkpoint, prompting officers to open fire in self-defence.

Ellis was pronounced dead at Savanna-la-Mar Hospital at 11:03 p.m. Hospital staff reportedly indicated that he was shot in the chest or neck.

 

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has taken statements from witnesses and is investigating the incident.
