St. Catherine, Jamaica – Jason Green, a 41-year-old man charged with the murder of his sister, has been ruled unfit to plead and will remain in state custody at the court’s pleasure.
The ruling was handed down in the St. Catherine Circuit Court by Justice Bertram Morrison, after medical evidence from three doctors confirmed that Green suffers from bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other mental illnesses.
Green was charged with the July 19, 2023 murder of 56-year-old Nicola Ogilvie, who was found dead in her bed at her home in White Water Meadows, Spanish Town, St. Catherine, with her head bashed in.
An investigation determined that she died from blunt force trauma caused by repeated blows to the head, following a dispute between the siblings. Green was later arrested and charged with murder.
During the proceedings, the jury was asked to consider the medical evidence, which indicated that Green:
• Could not understand basic communication,
• Was unable to give instructions to his lawyer, and
• Could not stand trial due to his psychiatric condition.
After deliberations, the jury ruled that he was unfit to plead, and when asked by the judge if additional time was needed, the jury foreman confirmed their decision was final.
Following the ruling, the court ordered that Green be held in a psychiatric facility, where he will receive ongoing mental health treatment.
He was represented by attorney-at-law Steven Jackson throughout the legal proceedings.
