The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is ramping up pressure on Kingston Mayor Andrew Swaby, demanding his immediate resignation as Chairman of the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) amid what they describe as a deepening corruption scandal linked to the People’s National Party (PNP).
The demand was made during a media conference held on Monday at the JLP’s Belmont Road headquarters, where party officials outlined their concerns about the handling of KSAMC resources under Swaby’s leadership.
During the briefing, JLP Communication Taskforce Spokesman, Senator Marlon Morgan, revealed that on October 30, 2024, a senior administrative staffer working closely with Swaby’s KSAMC team allegedly instructed a PNP caretaker to determine the political affiliation of several individuals in Central Kingston before granting them assistance and paid work from the KSAMC.
The decision to provide assistance was reportedly made only after confirmation that the individuals were PNP supporters.
Senator Morgan accused Mayor Swaby of misleading both the KSAMC and the public, stating:
“The emerging information contradicts and confirms as misleading and false assertions by Mayor Swaby that the KSAMC has been distributing access to assistance and benefits to people on a non-partisan and fair basis and governed by principles of transparency. The mayor misled a recent meeting of the KSAMC and Jamaica when he insisted that the KSAMC has not been distributing resources in a vulgar and partisan manner.”
Morgan also dismissed Swaby’s previous denials that funds distributed by his team to PNP caretakers on the KSAMC compound were privately raised, suggesting that the leaked audio recordings and WhatsApp chats contradict those claims.
Given the growing controversy, Morgan reiterated the JLP’s demand for Swaby’s resignation, stating:
“In light of the conflicting statements issued by Mayor Swaby and the leaked audio of conversations which have given rise to the PNP/KSAMC corruption scandal, the Jamaica Labour Party calls for the immediate resignation of Andrew Swaby as Mayor of Kingston and Chairman of the KSAMC. We do not believe that Swaby can be trusted to govern the affairs of the KSAMC in a fair, equitable, and transparent manner.”
Morgan further noted that at least three law enforcement agencies are reviewing the scandal, including the leaked WhatsApp conversations involving PNP General Secretary Dr. Dayton Campbell, Mayor Andrew Swaby, and other senior PNP figures.
The JLP insists that the matter must be fully investigated, as it raises serious concerns about the misuse of public resources.
As of now, the PNP and Mayor Swaby have not issued an official response to the JLP’s demands.
