ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — A 53-year-old man accused of killing his elderly mother has been further remanded following his appearance in the St Catherine Parish Court on Tuesday.
The accused, Paulo Grant, faces charges in connection with the death of his 80-year-old mother, Jasmine Grant, also known as “Sister Grant.” Her body was discovered at the home they shared in the Cheesefield district of St Catherine.
During Tuesday’s proceedings, the court was informed that medical documentation submitted by the Crown confirmed Grant is fit to enter a plea. It was also revealed that he had previously been receiving outpatient treatment at a mental health institution and was under his mother’s care.
However, the case was unable to proceed after Grant’s attorney indicated that an interpreter is required. The court heard that the accused, who once lived in France, has limited ability to communicate in English.
The matter has been adjourned until June 2, 2026.
Reports indicate that the incident came to light about 11 a.m. on November 19, 2025, when members of the woman’s church visited her home after unsuccessful attempts to contact her by phone. Upon entering the premises, they discovered her body and alerted the police.
Investigators later determined that the body was in an advanced stage of decomposition and bore multiple wounds. Grant, who was present at the house at the time, was taken into custody and subsequently charged following a question-and-answer session.
