Dubai, UAE – An 18-year-old man from London has been sentenced to one year in a Dubai jail after being convicted of assaulting a 17-year-old girl. Marcus Fakana, from Tottenham, was arrested in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) following a relationship with another Londoner during a family holiday in the UAE earlier this year.
Fakana was in Dubai with his parents from the end of August when he met the girl, and they reportedly began a romantic relationship. However, after returning to the UK, the girl’s mother discovered photos and messages related to the relationship and reported it to Dubai authorities. Following an investigation, Fakana was arrested at his hotel in Dubai.
The ‘Detained in Dubai’ campaign group has heavily criticized the UK government’s response, claiming Fakana has been abandoned by the British authorities. In a statement, the group called the sentence an “utter disgrace” and an “embarrassment to Britain,” accusing the government of prioritizing trade deals over the welfare of its citizens. The group also expressed concerns that the British government has not provided adequate support for Fakana in this case.
Fakana’s family and supporters have expressed their outrage, saying that the teenager has been unfairly targeted and that the punishment is excessively harsh. Fakana’s legal team has maintained that the charges are overstated and that the relationship was consensual, with Fakana unaware of the legal implications of the situation when he was in Dubai.
Fakana’s sentence has drawn attention to the issue of UK citizens facing legal challenges abroad, with many calling for stronger diplomatic support in cases involving British nationals in foreign countries. As of now, there has been no official statement from the British government regarding the case.
Fakana is set to begin serving his sentence in Dubai, with his supporters continuing to demand his release and further investigation into the case.
