Kingston, Jamaica – A couple facing multiple drug-related charges after the seizure of approximately 902 pounds of ganja and over $800,000 at their home has been granted bail in the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court.
Robert Mahoney and his wife, Evette Creary-Mahoney, were arrested on November 30, 2024, after police executed a search warrant at their residence. Following the discovery, they were charged with:
- Taking steps to export ganja
- Using premises as storage of ganja
- Possession of criminal property
- Conspiracy to export ganja
- Possession of ganja
- Dealing in ganja
During the hearing on Tuesday, Senior Parish Judge Sanchia Burrell questioned the presence of such a large quantity of the drug at their home. Mahoney’s attorney explained that his client had been asked by a friend to temporarily store the ganja, but the individual never returned. The attorney further clarified that Creary-Mahoney was unaware of the ganja being stored in the house.
The court was informed that Mahoney wished to expedite the proceedings and take responsibility for his actions. Mahoney pleaded guilty to three charges:
- Using premises as storage of ganja
- Possession of ganja
- Dealing in ganja (after admitting to selling more than eight ounces on November 7, 2024).
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the remaining charges, including possession of criminal property, as the $800,000 seized was allegedly tied to illegal activity. The attorney argued that the money was a result of round robins (a local savings system) that Creary-Mahoney participated in. Creary-Mahoney pleaded not guilty to all six charges.
The couple’s attorney petitioned the court for bail, which was granted:
- Robert Mahoney: $1 million
- Evette Creary-Mahoney: $500,000
As part of their bail conditions, the couple must:
- Report to the Half-Way-Tree police station every Wednesday and Saturday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
- Surrender all travel documents.
- Comply with a stop order placed at all ports of exit.
Sentencing for Robert Mahoney is set for February 27, 2025, while Creary-Mahoney will continue to fight the charges in court.
