Jamaica has received a US$100,000 donation from the Republic of Korea to aid in rebuilding efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl. The powerful Category 4 storm made landfall on July 3, leaving a trail of destruction across the island.
The donation was formally acknowledged by Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Alando Terrelonge, who received the confirmation from Jin-wook Kim, Charge d’Affaires at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, during a meeting at the ministry’s downtown Kingston offices on Wednesday.
The funds have already been transferred to the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), which is overseeing the recovery operations. The donation is expected to play a crucial role in supporting ongoing efforts to rebuild infrastructure, restore essential services, and assist communities hardest hit by the hurricane.
Expressing the Jamaican Government’s deep appreciation, Minister Terrelonge highlighted the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Jamaica and the Republic of Korea. He emphasized that this generous contribution is a testament to the strong ties between the two nations.
“This donation is a significant demonstration of solidarity during a challenging period for Jamaica,” Terrelonge stated. “We are committed to building back better and stronger, and with the support of our international partners like the Republic of Korea, we are confident in our ability to recover and thrive.”
The contribution from the Republic of Korea adds to the global support Jamaica has received as it navigates the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. The government and local agencies continue to work diligently to restore normalcy and ensure that the most vulnerable populations are supported during the recovery process.
