Escaped Convict Who Killed 1-Year-Old, Captured in Early Morning Raid

Ramone Alston, a convicted murderer who escaped from custody earlier this week, was apprehended in the early hours of Friday morning at a hotel in Kannapolis, North Carolina.

The capture occurred shortly before 2 a.m. following a coordinated operation involving FBI Charlotte SWAT agents, Kannapolis Police, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. The North Carolina Department of Corrections confirmed the details of Alston’s capture.

Alston had managed to break free from custody on Tuesday morning while being escorted to a medical appointment at UNC Hospital in Hillsborough. He reportedly escaped by freeing himself from leg restraints and fleeing into nearby woods, still wearing handcuffs. This triggered a large-scale search operation involving state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies, who utilized aerial surveillance, canine units, and extensive ground searches across hundreds of acres.

The successful apprehension of Alston marked the end of a tense few days for law enforcement and the community. Authorities indicated that he was taken into custody without incident or injury to anyone involved.

In a related development, Jacobia Crisp, a female acquaintance of Alston, was arrested in Alamance County later that morning. She has been charged with felony aiding and abetting a fugitive, further complicating the case as investigations continue.

Alston, who was convicted of the 2015 Christmas Day shooting that killed 1-year-old Maleah Williams, had been serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. The infant was tragically struck by gunfire while playing with her new toys outside her home, a crime that had shocked the community and led to Alston’s eventual conviction for first-degree murder.

Following his capture, Alston faces new charges for felony escape from prison. He has been transferred to a high-security unit within the state prison system, where he will continue to serve his life sentence while awaiting further court proceedings related to his escape.
