MONTEGO BAY, St. James – JN Money customers have donated $1 million to the Jamaica Cancer Society (JCS) and Jamaica Reach to Recovery, its affiliate, to combat rising costs and resource challenges in the fight against breast cancer. The funds, raised through the JN Group’s annual ‘Take the Brave Steps’ campaign in October 2024, were recently presented to the organizations.
Breast cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Jamaican women. The JN Money initiative allowed customers in the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Cayman Islands, and Jamaica to contribute to the cause.
Sanya Wallace, assistant general manager, strategy, marketing and sales at JN Money, emphasized the importance of collective action and JN Money’s commitment to the communities it serves. “Our customers have consistently demonstrated their generosity,” Wallace stated, highlighting their support even during the COVID-19 pandemic. “This donation reflects their selflessness and our commitment to making a meaningful difference.”
Michael Leslie, acting executive director of JCS, expressed gratitude for the donation, stating it will bolster screening programs and educational activities. He noted that JCS conducts approximately 200 mammography screenings per week at a subsidized cost, emphasizing the importance of early detection.
Sandra Samuels, president of Jamaica Reach to Recovery, explained that the funds will support financial, psychological, and other vital assistance to those affected by breast cancer. The organization provides up to $100,000 per person for tests, scans, and medication, requiring a doctor’s referral and invoice for disbursement. “Many women cannot even find the first dollar to start the process of recovery,” Samuels explained, highlighting the expense of breast cancer treatment. “Donations like these are so important to charities like ours as they assist us to aid underserved women who may otherwise not be able to access support during their difficult breast cancer journey.”
