A verdict is expected on December 20 for Kayodi Satchell, the dental assistant who admitted to the kidnapping and brutal murder of eight-year-old Danielle Rowe. Satchell, who cited feelings of “frustration and bitterness” after being jilted by the child’s father, who also infected her with the HIV virus, confessed to the crime that has shocked the nation.
In June of 2023, Satchell abducted Rowe from Braeton Primary and Infant School in Portmore, St. Catherine. She then took the child to a remote location in St. Andrew, where she fed her a meal before tragically stabbing her to death. Rowe was later found by a member of the Jamaica Defence Force on Roosevelt Avenue, her throat slashed. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the child succumbed to her injuries two days later on June 10.
Satchell, who pleaded guilty to the heinous act in September 2024, displayed signs of remorse during her sentencing hearing. In a moment of seeming penitence, Satchell was seen dabbing her eyes and blowing her nose, while court staff, as well as Rowe’s grieving family, visibly struggled with their emotions. Danielle’s mother, Sudine Mason, was seen silently sobbing throughout the proceedings, at one point murmuring, “mi baby,” as the horrific details of the crime were recounted.
The case has sparked widespread outrage and sorrow across Jamaica, as the brutal murder of a young child by someone who was once trusted has deeply affected the community. Satchell will learn her fate on December 20, when the court delivers its sentencing.
