Kingston, Jamaica : JDF Rescues Fishermen — The Jamaica Defence Force’s Maritime Air and Cyber Command (MACC) successfully conducted a rescue operation to save nine fishermen stranded at Morant Cays. Initially reported missing as 11, subsequent updates confirmed the number reduced to nine, as stated in a recent JDF release.
The fishermen embarked from Cow Bay, St Andrew, in three canoe-type vessels on Saturday, June 29, with plans to return by Tuesday, July 2. However, when they failed to return and attempts to contact them proved unsuccessful, the JDF was alerted and promptly launched a search and rescue mission.
The JDF reported that the fishermen were found trapped on Morant Cays, unable to navigate due to deteriorating sea conditions caused by the passage of Hurricane Beryl. They were safely escorted to shore by members of the JDF Coast Guard, where emotional reunions awaited with their families.
The JDF reiterated its commitment to maritime safety, advising seafarers to report overdue or distressed vessels to the MACC at (876) 926-8121 (extension 4004-6) or (876) 836-1216. They emphasized their dedication to using their resources and operational capabilities to safeguard lives and ensure the well-being of all citizens.
