Jah Cure to Continue Serving Six-Year Sentence After Dutch Court Ruling

Amsterdam, Netherlands – Reggae star Jah Cure will remain behind bars as he continues to serve his six-year sentence for attempted manslaughter, following a Dutch court’s ruling last week. The decision was made during a pro forma hearing on August 21, 2024, as Dutch prosecutors seek to challenge his previous acquittal on a more serious attempted murder charge.

Jah Cure, born Siccature Alcock, appeared in court as part of the procedural requirement under Dutch law, which mandates that inmates attend pro forma hearings while awaiting trial dates. The purpose of these hearings is to review and decide on the status of the suspect’s incarceration every 90 days.

Tuscha Essed, press officer for the Public Prosecution Service, confirmed to Observer Online, “The process is still in the hands of the investigative judge for the hearing of witnesses. The next pro forma date is November 12.” This indicates that Jah Cure’s case will continue to be monitored, with further legal proceedings scheduled for later in the year.

In March 2022, Jah Cure was convicted of attempted manslaughter and sentenced to six years in prison following an incident in October 2021. The Jamaican artist was found guilty of stabbing a Dutch concert promoter over a dispute regarding unpaid performance fees. The court ruled that his actions did not constitute premeditated attempted murder, leading to his acquittal on that more serious charge. However, this acquittal was subsequently challenged by Dutch prosecutors, who are now seeking to overturn it.

The singer, known for his hit tracks “Longing For,” “Love Is,” “That Girl,” and “True Reflection (Behind These Prison Walls),” was remanded in January 2024 as the appeal process continued.

Jah Cure’s continued imprisonment underscores the ongoing legal battles he faces, as both the Dutch legal system and his supporters await the outcome of the forthcoming hearings.
