MANCHESTER, Jamaica — A man said to be mentally ill was fatally shot by police in Manchester on Sunday after reportedly attacking officers with stones.
The incident occurred around 1 p.m. in Kingsland, following an earlier confrontation in which the man allegedly assaulted a senior citizen on the Kingsland main road.
According to reports, the senior citizen ran to a nearby gas station for help, prompting the police to respond. Upon their arrival, the man began hurling stones at the officers, injuring three of them. Despite warning shots being fired in an effort to de-escalate the situation, the man continued to throw stones, leading to the police firing at him.
The man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The senior citizen and the injured policemen were also treated at the hospital for their injuries.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched an inquiry into the shooting.
