The Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) has confirmed that 12 people were fatally shot by security forces across six incidents on January 1 and 5.
Four deaths occurred on January 5, including a triple shooting in St. Toolies, Manchester, and another fatality in Clarendon. On January 1, eight people died in multiple incidents, including two triple shootings in St. James and Westmoreland, with three victims under 18.
Deputy Commissioner Yanique Taylor-Wellington expressed concern over the rising trend, noting a 65% increase in fatal police shootings in 2025 and a 300% rise in the first five days of 2026.
Indecom reported that eight firearms were recovered, no body-worn cameras were activated, and all crime scenes were thoroughly processed. Officers involved have been served Section 21 notices for statements and interviews.
