KINGSTON, Jamaica — The government’s $75-million allocation to churches affected by Hurricane Melissa is intended for debris removal and property clean-up, not reconstruction, Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness clarified on Monday.
Churches can access the support after assessments by relevant state agencies, with guidance available through local offices. Holness noted the funding is part of a wider national clean-up effort targeting the most affected parishes.
The announcement sparked debate, with MP Everald Warmington criticizing the use of taxpayer funds for religious institutions, while Bishop Dr. Alvin Bailey defended the move, highlighting the church’s role in disaster response and community support.
Minister Desmond McKenzie confirmed the Social Development Commission will oversee the assessments and fund disbursement. Hurricane Melissa, which hit October 28, killed at least 45 people and caused US$8.8 billion in damage, leaving many communities still without power.
