St Catherine, Jamaica — Thirty-five-year-old Peter Walters was sentenced to life imprisonment on Friday in the St Catherine Circuit Court for the murder of his wife, 34-year-old Nickeisha DaCosta-Walters. He must serve 18 years and five months before being eligible for parole.
Walters pleaded guilty on June 19, 2023, to killing DaCosta-Walters at their Berkshire Hall, St Catherine home on August 26, 2022. The crime, committed in the presence of their child, shocked the local community and drew widespread condemnation.
In handing down the sentence, Justice Bertram Morrison emphasized the severity of the crime. “I think that your action shocked the public’s conscience, as it was done in the presence of your child, but it cannot be discounted that you’ve pleaded guilty,” Morrison said.
The court heard that Walters, overcome with jealousy and anger after accusing his wife of infidelity, stabbed her repeatedly during a domestic dispute. The violence unfolded in their home, leading to her death. Following the attack, Walters fled the scene but later turned himself in at the Linstead Police Station, where he was taken into custody.
Walters’ defense attorney, Ludlow Black, stressed his client’s remorse and cooperation with authorities during the plea for mitigation. However, Justice Morrison ruled that the aggravating factors of the case outweighed any mitigating circumstances.
Walters has already spent two years and five months in custody, which will be deducted from his sentence.
