Juliet Holness has been elected vice-chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), making her the first Jamaican to hold the position in 33 years.
Holness was elected on Thursday during the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Cape Town, South Africa.
Her election marks Jamaica’s return to the CPA vice-chairpersonship since former Speaker Headley Cunningham served from 1992 to 1993.
Holness previously chaired the CPA Caribbean, Americas and the Atlantic (CAA) Region. Her tenure culminated in Jamaica hosting the 48th CPA CAA Regional Conference from August 30 to September 5, 2026.
She described her election as a “proud and significant moment” for Jamaica and said she accepted the responsibility with humility and a commitment to strengthening parliamentary institutions.
Holness also credited delegates from the CAA Region for supporting her candidacy, saying the achievement reflected a broader regional effort.
She will serve a one-year term as CPA vice-chairperson as the organisation advances its 2026–2029 Strategic Plan and moves towards a new international legal status.
The conference is being held in Cape Town from September 13 to 19 under the theme: “Strengthening International Law and Parliamentary Democracy in a Changing World Order: Commonwealth Leadership.”
