Latest Jamaica News, Trelawny (McKoy’s News): A handcart operator was beaten in Falmouth, Trelawny, by a member of the municipal police, leaving him with two broken fingers.
Charles Williams, who goes by the name ‘Mankind’, was reduced to tears when recalling the ordeal.
Williams said that the officer was in the process of taking his cart away, so he held on to the cart.
“Me a reverse the cart and a say just cool man, and him just turn round a tek him baton and bruck me finger,” Williams said.
Williams said the officer told him “don’t touch it! If yuh touch it a box yuh down,” because he had his handcart in the pedestrianized area of the resort town.
The Municipal Corporation has warning posted around the city, warning cart vendors that they should not park their carts on certain streets: it warns that “if seen, they will be removed“.
Williams recalled that the officer taunted him while he begged for his cart not to be seized; stating: “yuh wah deh pon social media to?” poking fun at the previous incident of another man being beaten by the same alleged officer.
It is said that the handcart has since been dismantled and dumped at the offices of the Trelawny Municipal Corporation.
While attempts have been made to report the matter to the Falmouth Police Station, Williams has been was turned away. The police have stated that nothing can be done by them, however, he should attempt to report the matter to INDECOM (Independent Commission of Investigations).
His doctor states that Williams’ fingers will take up to 6 weeks to heal. He states that while he is in physical pain, that pales in comparison to the feeling of helplessness that has engulfed him. His mother is 90 and now he has to beg people who knows him to help out.
