Gunman Caught after Robbing Female Coming from Church in Montego Bay

Jamaica Crime News, Montego Bay: A lone gunman who held up and robbed a female who was returning from church in Montego Bay, St James on Wednesday night, was later cornered by the police and taken into custody after he challenged them in a heated gun battle.

The accused who is now in police custody has been identified as 20-year-old Ricardo Vassell of a Providence Heights address,  in Flankers.

He is now facing charges of armed robbery and assault.

Reports by the police are that about  10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the 26-year-old woman who resides at Sewell Avenue in Montego Bay, was heading home from a Church meeting, which was held at the church compound on the City Centre Building.

She was walking along the roadway when she was attacked from behind by a man armed with a handgun.

The brave woman put up a struggle and fought off her attacker, while screaming for help. The gunman then grabbed her handbag and attempted to run from the scene.

Two police officers who were on patrol duties in the area ran to her rescue and gave chase after the gunman, who challenged them in a heated gun battle.

The officers radio for backup and upon arrival of other officers,  a section of the area was cordoned off.

During a search of the area, Vassell who was later identified to be the gunman was held by the police.
