KINGSTON, Jamaica — Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, is urging Jamaicans to unite in rebuilding the country following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
His message was delivered by Custos Rotulorum for St. Thomas, Hon. Marcia Bennett, during the National Emancipation and Independence Thanksgiving Church Service held on Sunday at the Olson Memorial Church of God on Hope Road in St. Andrew.
Reflecting on this year’s national celebration theme, “United in Celebrating Resilience,” Sir Patrick said Jamaica’s history has always been shaped by perseverance in the face of hardship. He noted that while Emancipation and Independence marked significant milestones in the nation’s journey, they also required Jamaicans to take responsibility for building their future.
The Governor-General said today’s generation faces a different challenge as families rebuild homes, businesses recover, and communities continue to recover from Hurricane Melissa. He stressed that resilience is not only about enduring hardship but also about working together to restore lives and communities.
He praised the efforts of neighbours, churches, emergency responders, and ordinary citizens who have supported recovery efforts across the island, describing their actions as a reflection of Jamaica’s enduring spirit.
Sir Patrick also encouraged Jamaicans to ensure that this year’s Emancipation and Independence celebrations strengthen the nation’s commitment to compassion, service, and unity while remembering those still recovering from the hurricane.
He concluded by offering prayers for God’s continued guidance and blessings as Jamaica rebuilds and moves toward a future of peace, justice, and hope.
