Government Opens St. James Child and Adolescent Wellness Centre in Montego Bay

The Government has inaugurated the St. James Child and Adolescent Wellness Centre, a pivotal facility aimed at addressing youth mental health services in Western Jamaica.

Located at the refurbished Corinaldi Avenue Primary School Teachers’ Cottage on 1 Humber Avenue in Montego Bay, the centre was officially opened on January 16. It was established under the Citizen Security Plan, a collaborative effort involving the Ministries of Health and Wellness; Education, Skills, Youth and Information; National Security; the European Union, and private sector partners.

Focus on Youth Mental Health

The centre is designed to provide comprehensive mental health services for young people in St. James and the wider Western Jamaica region. Services include:

  • Individual psychotherapy
  • Family therapy
  • Social work support
  • Psychiatric services

This development comes as recent studies reveal that 20% of Jamaican children experience mental health challenges, such as depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and conduct disorders.

Key Stakeholders Highlight Importance

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr. Horace Chang, emphasized the critical role of the facility in addressing youth exposed to violence and social dysfunction.

“These youngsters will get the psychological counselling they need while social workers assist in resolving their social issues, offering a holistic approach,” Dr. Chang explained.

He also called for increased funding and commitment to support similar initiatives, urging collaboration with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the private sector to rescue at-risk youth from criminal influences.

Dr. Chang commended private-sector partners, including Doctor’s Cave, the Sandals Foundation, and the Gore Family Foundation, for their contributions to this initiative.

Statistics Show Urgent Need

Health and Wellness Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton highlighted the urgency of early intervention, noting that 63% of Jamaicans with mental health issues experience onset before age 25, and 35% display symptoms before age 14.

“This wellness centre is an absolute necessity,” said Dr. Tufton. “The young people who will benefit from it will undoubtedly be appreciative.”

A Beacon of Hope

State Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Alando Terrelonge, described the centre as a “beacon of hope” for the community. He underscored the importance of emotional, behavioural, physical, and social health for Jamaica’s youth to become the nation’s future leaders.

Terrelonge noted that the initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those promoting well-being for all ages.

“The clinic’s expanded capabilities will help bridge existing gaps in the health sector, ensuring that more children and their families receive the support they need,” Terrelonge stated.

A Step Forward

The opening of the St. James Child and Adolescent Wellness Centre marks a significant advancement in Jamaica’s efforts to address youth mental health. By providing critical services and fostering collaboration among government, NGOs, and private partners, the centre is set to play a transformative role in the lives of many young Jamaicans.
